New Arrivals Wooden Hanging Letters

For those of you who are moms, I'm sure that you have seen the New Arrivals Wooden Hanging Letters in catalogs or in friend's nurseries. Even though these letters have been around for over seven years, they are still their #1 selling product and are still cute. Now with more ribbon choices than ever, you can make these work with any decor. I think they have been so popular because they are an easy way to fill up wall space and are lightweight and safe to put above a baby's crib. The only catch is that the letters only come in a distressed off-white color, but this allows you to be creative with the ribbon. I also think it would be cute to paint a design on the letters if you are dying to make them more unique.

A few years ago, with the strong popularity of their wooden letters, New Arrivals came out with the Framed Letters. These are also fun but work best with short names (fewer than 6 letters). And if the name you are using is longer than three letters, I like using alternating wallpaper backgrounds to create more interest.

Then last year New Arrivals introduced the Fabric Letters. These only come in green & blue or pink & green.

Now Anthropologie also has fabric covered letters in brighter more funky colors if blue, pink. & green are not in your color scheme.

For a more modern room I love these Zinc Letters from Anthropologie, they come in 25" and 8" Sizes. If you have a big wall go for the 25" size, much more dramatic!

Turquoise is the 2010 Pantone Color of the Year

Pantone 15-5519 (Turquoise) was recently named the 2010 color of the year.

I personally love Turquoise and actually painted my whole living room Benjamine Moore Arctic Blue a few years ago and have never regretted my decision. Turquoise is an uplifting, yet calming color. It pairs nicely with neutral shades such as white, black, beige, and brown yet also looks stunning paired with red, yellow, orange, and lime green.

Turquoise became a popular color to use in childrens rooms and nurseries about two years ago and is all the rage now. I'm sure we will see some even more creative designs come out in 2010 now. Below are some wonderful images of childrens rooms using turquoise.

Christmas Kids Table Ideas

I saw this photo during Thanksgiving on DecoPeques and thought it was a wonderful idea for a "kids table" during the holidays. The hardest thing about having a kids table is keeping them there, so why not do what the Italian restaurants do and let them draw on the table? For Christmas, switch out the red pears for mini Christmas Trees (or rosemary bushes) that they can take home with them.

And look at this adorable modern tablescape as seen on freshome. I just love the mini Lou Lou Ghost Chairs by Kartell!

Custom Toy Portraits Artwork

While researching some sites today on the internet I came across a new wonderful blog called Chic Squirt. It is written by a stay-at-home mom named Celia who works in Brooklyn and who has a daughter around the same age as my son. She really has a wonderful eye for interesting and chic childrens products, check it out. Well while looking through old posts I fell in love with this site called Custom Toy Portraits that she posted about which makes custom portraits of your childrens toys for very reasonable prices in around two weeks starting at $60! Jennifer Maher is the artist behind the portraits. She started painting to document her child's toys and soon turned her talent into a wonderful business. These would make wonderful gifts for a child at any age. I would love to see a collection of these (two from each child) in a playroom. Heck I might see if my mom can send over some of my old toys that she saved so that I can have a portrait made of them!

Anyone recognize these guys? I'm sure your child has one or two. We call ours "lovies".

She even makes Grover look cute!

Simple Things in Fort Worth, Texas

I would like to introduce you all to a wonderful store in Fort Worth, Texas called Simple Things. It is a home decor store filled with comfortable furniture, antique wood pieces, unique decorative accessories, and luxurious linens. You can find something here for every room of your house from the living room, to the bedroom, to your nursery. The boutique receives in new shipments bi-weekly so if you live in the area, it is worth stopping by once a week. Even if you don't purchase anything, the store will inspire you to re-decorate a few rooms in your home.

Simple Things is located in University Plaza and has been in the same location for 12 years. Some of the lines that carry include Dash & Albert Rugs, Corsican Cribs, Lee Industries, Matteo Bedding, Bella Notte Linens, and Sugarboo Designs Artwork. But besides these lines, the owners acquire unique antique pieces which are unusual, country chic, and comfortably casual. I'm just waiting for them to put up a website!

Simple Things
1540 S. University, Suite 110
Fort Worth, TX 76107

The linens above are Bella Notte & Matteo (mixing white and cream in different textures, so chic and fresh). Played against the dark chalkboard wall really makes them pop. And I love the idea of writing out a screenplay on the wall, so LA but in Teaxs? Who would have thought that you could find this in Fort Worth?! Love it!

Look at the stenciled white-wash floor! That would look fabulous in a breakfast room or a more contemporary library. And the canopy bed? Perfect for a guest room or teenager's room.

A painted globe, a wonderful accessory for a childrens room.

This vintage American flag is perfect to fill up wall space in a boys room. All of you out there with red, white and blue bedding...I would purchase this ASAP!

Their selection of Dash & Albert Rugs and samples. It is nice to have the ability to take home actual samples before you order the larger rugs.

Below is a shot of their bedding section. Simple things has a very large selection of stocked Bella Notte Bedding which is very unusual. This is helpful in designing your bed since it usually takes 6 weeks to get pieces ordered. Having a large selection of colors and textures allows you to play with different bed design concepts in person before you purchase. Happy Shopping!

Pixie Lily Tiny Couture Creations

If you are in search for that special holiday or shower gift for expectant parents or new parents who love classic, quality, timeless pieces, search no more. All you need to do is visit the Pixie Lily website and your shopping is done! Founder and designer Leda Jackson has created a wonderful line of layette and infant clothing which is known for its "no fuss" elegance and attention to detail. Although based in Charleston, South Carolina her line is carried in top retail boutiques around the country.

We carried a full stock of the Jersey Collection at Sprout and sold it primarily as heirloom-quality take-me-home outfits. The french knot embroidered detail on the Jersey Collection photographs beautifully, so when you are looking for a special outfit for your announcements or baby's first photo shoot you can't go wrong. The cotton is extremely soft luxurious so baby loves being in it just as much as you love staring at them in it.

As the baby gets older, these Bastide daygowns are a nice choice for playdates or photos again. They are accented with detailed embroidery and pintucks. I just love the elegant attention to detail! Instant heirloom pieces!

Decals (Wilson Graphics, Apple Pie Design, Blik)

I was introduced to Wilson Graphics by a recent post on Project Nursery and am very impressed with their whimsical graphics. I like the look of dramatic over-sized graphics on a wall but was really drawn to this line because these are some of the first that I have seen in a pattern instead of being just one solid color. This adds a little more depth and design to the wall graphic and makes it feel a little softer and not as modern and cold.

A great bedding set to pair these with is the Serena & Lily organic Dylan Set. Since the Dylan set is so pale and soft, using decals like this on the wall will really make a punch if you want to add in more color and pattern into the room.

The company also has a few other designs which I found to be interesting and unusual. The garden fence pictured below is a playful and cheaper alternative to the painted picket fence which always looks so cute in a girls room.

If the patterned animals are a little too busy for you, Apple Pie Design also makes some nice jungle animal silhouettes.

Some decal companies can also make custom designs for you, so if you want something to match your bedding or a piece of artwork exactly, you would just need to send them dimensions and a photo. For example Blik studios in Venice, CA makes very high quality customizable graphics, the sky is the limit with them! The photos below are some examples of complete wall-scape concepts which they customized for each home. We carried their line of standard decals at Sprout and sold out frequently. I highly recommend using them.

Nativity Sets

I remember playing with nativity sets when I was a little girl. My two sisters and I each had our own sets and would put them up under our mini Christmas trees in our bedrooms. It was fun to play out the stories that we learned at Sunday school and from our parents about the true meaning of Christmas. The following are some nativity sets available for the holidays. Price ranges vary from $25-$100.
This is a pretty basic set and looks the most similar to the one that I had growing up. I am a little nostalgic for this one because of that. I also love it's simplicity and small size (perfect to fit under a mini tree). Available at Amazon
The set above is by Sevi and is my favorite. Unfortunately I could only find it on-line in Europe at

HABA (the German wooden toy giant) makes the Limited Edition set above, it is pretty widely available on-line but I found it at one of my favorite on-line stores Blueberry Forest. HABA is known for their quality, craftsmanship and safety. This is a close second favorite and available in the US!

The more lego-ish set above is a plastic one by Playmobile and is readily available at Target along with the set below by Toy Workshop. Both are nice alternatives if you don't want to shell out more than $50.
