Teen Girl Rooms in House Beautiful by Pat Healing

The October issue of House Beautiful has a wonderful array of homes displaying unique styles and colors in classical homes.  One of my favorite features was of a home of a young family with three teenage girls designed by Pat Healing of HB Home. The girls all got to help pick the color palette of their rooms.  Each room is very different yet they all feature bold wallpaper, simple white monogrammed bed linens, predominantly white furniture, and stunning ceiling lighting fixtures.

The first room combines the colors of brown, pink and orange (an unexpected combination for a teen room).  To make the room more playful Healing used Splatter wallpaper from Hinson and a carpet with a  strong design.

The second daughter chose a color combination of turquoise and sprout green.  The graphic mason-like wallpaper is Le Temple Des Grecs by Studio Printworks creates a large-scale graphic design in the room.

The oldest daughter picked the color combination of aqua and black.  The wallpaper is Paradise Background by Quadrille. For the complete list of resources for these rooms and the rest of the home, check out the House Beautiful October 2011 Product Guide.

Which daughter's room do you like best?  I'm a sucker for Quadrille and turquoise so I'm picking the last one.

Netto Collection Dresser for Sale - $300

The NettoCollection furniture is known for its elegant European streamline style.  I have a used changer/dresser for sale in a cherry finish (pictured above).  The piece was previously used by a staging company.  I actually have the darker stain in my own son's room (pictured below).  It is in such great condition I'd keep it myself if I had the space.

  • Dimensions: 37" High x 21" Wide x 41" Long
  • A hidden side drawer keeps changing essentials out of sight
  • Reversible top for conversion to adult
  • Cherry Ash, Veneer and  White Lacquer finish

The Moderne Changer retails for $1500 and I'm selling it for $300!  You must pick it up from my home in Manhattan Beach, I am not shipping this baby as it weighs over 200 lbs.  Please e-mail me at if you are interested in purchasing. First come to pick it up first serve :), this baby of mine is coming in 3 weeks and I'm in a major nesting phase.  God love my husband for putting up with me!

As an added note, for those of you without kids, it would work great as a bar in a living room.  The perfect size!

New Contemporary Craftsman Furniture

The craftsman look is coming back but not in a contemporary light.  A company in England called Another Country specializes in the look with handmade pieces in a soft-lined yet contemporary edge influenced by British Country, Shaker, Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork.

Here are some pieces in the collection which pertain to family design:

(playroom or children's room)

(children's room, kitchen or homework room)

(great for a mudroom, entryway, or playroom)

New from Spot On Square

Furniture manufacturer Spot on Square has come up with some new pieces in its every popular Roh collection.  What I like about these (same that I liked about Netto Collection) is that the pieces look good anywhere in the house and are not specifically for children's rooms.  Clean lines and made from locally sourced solid and veneered walnut.

Classic Nursery by Andrika King Design

Here are a few photos of a nursery I completed a few months ago for a client in Redondo Beach.  She has a traditional tuscan-style home and was looking for a design which exuded baby boy yet was sophisticated enough to also serve as a guest room while the family had visitors.

Since we kept the color on the walls, we added a splash of contrast with a pale grey-blue on the ceiling.

For more photos of this nursery and more of my projects, visit my portfolio on Andrika King Design

Here is a Before and After shot of the whole room:

Fun Finds

Here are some children's room decor "fun finds" I discovered on Pinterest this week:

Aren't these adorable?

And for the more Bauhaus-inspured nursery, theses hyper-minimalistic designed children's stories posters are truly unique.

Modern Design by Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper

Love or hate Donny Deutsch's playroom featured in Architectural Digest this month?

I want a cupcake stool! And the Osborne and Little Fabric below is whimsically sophisticated.

The home was designed by Architect Federic Schwartz and designers Tony Ingrao and Randy Kemper.

Here are a few more children's rooms designed by the Ingardo Design team.  They do it all: classic, modern, eclectic, contemporary and rustic:

Bunk Room Friday - Space Architecture and Planning

A unique and almost art-like design by Space Architecture and Planning featured on Freshome last week. Takes up a large amount of floor space but is almost like a fort!
